The eye is the only place in the body where a clinician can look directly at blood vessels and nerve tissue, with no surgery. A new paper in Ophthalmology argues that imaging it could help detect disease far beyond the eye. That includes diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and kidney and neurodegenerative disorders.
The article is the second peer-reviewed paper from the Alliance for Healthcare from the Eye. An international group of clinicians, researchers, and technology leaders wrote it. It offers a roadmap for the emerging field of oculomics.
The goal is to shift eye-based screening from one-off diagnosis toward continuous, connected care. The clearest proof of concept so far is diabetic retinopathy. In primary care, AI-enabled retinal screening has been linked to earlier detection and faster referral.
The framework also covers what scaling it responsibly will take: affordable access, transparent AI, and sustainable funding. The authors are clear that it’s a starting point, not a clinical guideline.
